Colors can be categorized based on several aspects:
the different models (RGB, CMYK, HSB)
Process color vs. Spot color
PANTONE colors
Also based on the color wheel (see page 132 in your text book)

The question is asking you to say how colors can be grouped together. You can pick any of the above and discuss how the colors relate to each other based on the category.

what is masking when discussing shapes in photoshop?

Masking protects one area of an image while leaving one area of an image available to be modified. Whenever you create a selection on an image, you are actually creating a mask; the area within th selection border can be manipulated while the area outside the selection boarder remains unaffected. When working with shapes in PhotoShop, you can use masking to select just a part of the shape to manipulate (like change the color in just half a circle)
Masking is powerful and we have just started our exploration of the technique.
